Canker Sores
Canker sores are small, painful lesions that occur on the soft tissues in your mouth and can make it difficult to talk or eat. These sores also known as aphthous ulcers, can develop inside your cheeks or lips, under your tongue, and at the base of your gums. Canker sores do not develop on the surface of your lips and they are not contagious.
There are many suggestions as to what causes canker sores:
- A faulty immune system that could be the result of:
- A systemic disease
- Chronic sexually transmitted diseases
- Tuberculosis
- Parasitic diseases
- Any disease that has a negative impact on the immune system
- Nutritional deficiency
- Certain types of bacteria present in the oral cavity that can attack and destroy normal tissue cells
- Digestive acids or the pH imbalance in your stomach
- High levels of stress
- Spices in certain foods
- Too much sun
- Hormone or chemical imbalances from medications or menstrual cycle (many think canker sores are hormonally related because women experience improvement during pregnancy)
- A systemic disease
- Injury to the oral cavity:
- Trauma
- Long dental appointment
- Removable dental prosthesis
- Orthodontic appliances
- Some believe:
- Hot coffee or hot chocolate
- Vinegar
- Citrus fruits
- Whole wheat breads or grains
- Nuts that are high in the amino acid arginine
- Hot cheese on pizza that burns the mouth (ulcers will develop due to the compromised tissue)
- Nutritional deficiencies (such as folic acid, vitamin B12 and iron)
All of the above can be an initiating factor in an outbreak of canker sores due to the fact that everyone has a different genetic and chemical composition. Everyone could have a different etiological factor that could trigger the outbreak of canker sores.
