Q.
Will Prevention™ Mouth Rinse help my canker sores?
A. Yes. When
you have a canker sore, rinse with Prevention Everyday Mouth
Rinse 3 to 5 times per day. Try to pool the rinse for 30 to
60 seconds in the area of your mouth where the canker sore
is located. You can also take a cotton ball, cotton Q-tip,
gauze or Toothette and apply the Prevention™ Mouth Rinse
directly to the canker sore 3 to 5 times per day. If you have
several canker sores at one time, you may need to use the
Prevention Periodontal Mouth Rinse until the canker sores
are healed, then switch to the Prevention Everyday Mouth Rinse.
For most people, rinsing with Prevention Everyday Mouth Rinse
daily will prevent the recurrence of canker sores. Prevention™
Mouth Rinse relieves the pain from canker sores and heals
them in 3 to 4 days. If your condition continues, seek professional
help as soon as possible. Back to Top |
Q. Can
Prevention™ Mouth Rinse be applied to Herpes Labialis, Type
I (cold sore or fever blister)?
A. Yes. When
you feel your lip start to burn or tingle, begin placing Prevention
Everyday Mouth Rinse on the area that is burning or tingling.
If you don’t see results, use the stronger Prevention
Periodontal Mouth Rinse. Do this 3 or 4 times per day using
a cotton ball or Toothette. If you already have a fever blister,
apply Prevention™ Mouth Rinse to the lesion as often as you
can (3 to 5 times per day). If the ulcer site is rinse accessible,
then rinse the area as often as you can for the first 3 to
4 days. For most individuals this treatment will stop or shorten
the pain, help reduce the healing time and recurrence of the
lesions. DO NOT kiss, share drinks, share eating utensils
or any object that comes in contact with the cold sore/fever
blister with another individual. Back to Top |
Q. Why
are there five varieties of rinses in the Prevention series
of rinses?
A. In the
past, dentists and doctors have had little choice in prescribing mouth
rinses. Prevention gives your practitioner a choice.
Five strengths are available depending on the needs of the
patient. The practitioner can select the strength that best
fits the patients needs. Back to Top |
Q. Do
all rinses contain the same ingredients?
A. Yes,
all five rinses contain the same basic chemical
formulation with different concentrations of certain
ingredients that science has shown is effective for certain
clinical situations. They
are:
- Zinc chloride - a powerful antimicrobial agent that
has many clinical applications cause the complexing of
the zinc ion.
- Sodium citrate - complexed with zinc ion it creates a
dynamic anti-inflammatory agent.
- Hydrogen peroxide - an oxygenating agent that provides
additional oxygen molecules for the complexing of the
zinc ion.
- Natural Glycerin - a lubricant; emollient, helpful with dry mouth.
The Orthodontic Rinse contains about five times the active ingredients
as the Prevention Everyday Rinse and 1% hydrogen peroxide,
while the Periodontal Rinse is the same as the Orthodontic,
except for twice the amount of active ingredients as the Orthodontic
and 1.5% hydrogen peroxide. Back to Top |
Q. What
is the purpose of hydrogen peroxide in the rinse?
A. There
are three main reasons why hydrogen peroxide is in the rinse.
First, the foaming action of the hydrogen action acts as
a cleansing agent against plaque and food particles. This
is especially important with the ortho rinse and well-documented
studies have shown that a 1.5% solution of the hydrogen
peroxide is very beneficial for patients in braces. Secondly,
the oxygenating agent helps the aerobic bacteria which are
typically non-pathogenic. Finally, although this effect
is minimal, the hydrogen peroxide acts against the anaerobic
(chiefly pathogenic) bacteria and complexing of the other
ingredients. Back to Top |
Q. Is
the alcohol content the same in all five rinses?
A. The
Regular Rinse contains 1.6% alcohol. The Orthodontic and Periodontal Rinses each contain 2.66% alcohol.
The Antibacterial (no alcohol) Rinse and Oncology Rinse contain 0% alcohol.

Q. If
Prevention™ Mouth Rinse doesn't have a high alcohol content,
will it kill harmful germs?
A. Yes.
Prevention Mouth Rinse will kill the disease-initiating
germs. Zinc chloride is a well-documented antimicrobial.
Hydrogen peroxide also has a limited antimicrobial action
on the germs of the mouth. Sodium lauryl sulfate makes the
zinc chloride more effective as an antimicrobial.

Q. Can
Prevention Orthodontic Rinse be used for patients with periodontal
problems?
A. Prevention
Orthodontic Rinse may be used for periodontal patients who
have mild problems, as well as a follow-up rinse to Periodontal
Strength Prevention Rinse in patients who have had severe
periodontal problems but now need to be maintained. Back to Top |
Q. Can
I use the Prevention Periodontal or Prevention Orthodontic
Rinses long-term?
A. Yes.
We encourage long-term use of Prevention Orthodontic Rinse
while patients are in braces. With the Prevention Periodontal
Rinse, however, we find that after 6-8 weeks of use, patients
can perceive a bitter taste. This may mean the bacteria have been
eliminated, and the patient can then use Prevention Everyday
Rinse. Back to Top |
|
Q. Is
Prevention™ Mouth Rinse approved by the Food and Drug Administration?
A. Prevention™
Mouth Rinse is approved as a cosmetic, as are all other
mouth rinses. We are having the necessary tests completed
under FDA protocol with the intention of obtaining therapeutic
status from the FDA. Back to Top |
|
Q. Can
Prevention Mouth Rinses be used with a water pic?
A. Yes.
Established studies indicate that liquids can penetrate
up to 3mm pockets. Using Prevention Rinses with an oral
irrigator such as a water pic may help get the product deeper
into the periodontal pocket. Back to Top |
|
Q. Why
do the Prevention Periodontal and Prevention Orthodontic Rinses
come in the dual chamber bottle?
A. With
both of these rinses, the hydrogen peroxide concentration
exceeds 1%. When all of the ingredients are combined in
these concentrations some of the solids begin to precipitate
out of the solution after an extended period of time. Back to Top |
|
Q. What
makes the Prevention™ Mouth Rinse better than other mouth
rinses?
A. Prevention™
Mouth Rinse is much more effective than most mouth rinses,
in that it contains four active ingredients. The University
of Iowa studies indicate that Everyday Prevention is effective
even to dilutions of 1:16. Back to Top |
|
Q. Can
Prevention™ Mouth Rinse help bad breath?
A. Prevention™
Eighty
percent of bad breath comes from the stomach in the majority
of people. Individuals who have bad breath due to their
oral hygiene will benefit from using Prevention Mouth Rinse. Back to Top |
